Private Gerald Patrick Hughes

 

This North Irish Horseman was probably the Gerald Patrick Hughes born at 2 Howard Street, Dublin, the second or third of three children of English-born parents, insurance agent Gerald Patrick Hughes and his wife Annie (née Kilroy). By the time of the 1911 Census he was living at 22 Barrow Street, Pembroke, West Dublin, with his mother, one surviving sibling and a half-brother.

Hughes enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 27 June and 30 July 1917 (regimental number between 2611 and 2615 – later Corps of Hussars No.71910).

In January 1918 he embarked for Egypt with a draft of North Irish Horsemen from the Antrim camp. There he was attached to the 1/1st Nottinghamshire Yeomanry (Sherwood Rangers). At the beginning of July 1918 he was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps (Cavalry) (No.169469).

On 9 March 1919 Hughes was demobilised and transferred to Class Z, Army Reserve.

After the war Hughes returned Dublin, living at Barrow Street. On 2 August 1922 at the Curragh he enlisted in the Mounted Service of the Irish Free State Army (No. VR/2671). He was still serving at the Curragh as late as 1928.

On 26 December 1924 he married Hanna Carroll of Barrhead, Scotland, in St Agatha's Roman Catholic Church, North William Street, Dublin.
